Warren and Son Nursery was started in 1948 when Otis Warren and his wife Fannie purchased a 2 1/2 acre tract of land at 10901 N.E. 23rd street. The land contained a small house, barn and was mostly covered in black jacks.

A small shed and a 10x30 foot greenhouse were added and each year some type of improvements were made and additional land was purchased until the home nursery grew into what is now 7 1/2 acres. Additional land was purchased in the close by area until there is 12 acres which is used to grow specimen trees and evergreens. We believe the fact that we are able to grow our own trees and evergreens makes it possible to provide fresh trees and evergreens for our customers.

After discharge from the Air Force, Preston joined the nursery full time in 1951, and in 1968 he and his wife Donna assumed ownership with the death of Otis Warren. Presently, Jack, a son-in-law who has been working full time for over 15 years, is responsible for us having the prettiest roses in town. Betty came into the family with her marriage to Preston and is striving to learn all the names of plants by answering the phone and working in the office.

One of the achievements of our nursery has been the introduction of several plants that have become standard in the horticultural field.

Oklahoma Redbud was discovered by my father and myself on a plant expedition in the Arbuckle mountains. This cultivar with its near red blooms and very glossy leaves has become the standard by which other trees are judged. I was present when the late Dr. Raulsston of North Carolina University told a group of horticulturists that he considered the Oklahoma redbud the best small flowering tree in cultivation.

We also introduced the Rubye Atkinson Redbud that has a shell pink blooms and is grown by several well known nurseries.

Warren's Red Deciduous Holly was selected from a planting at Will Rogers Park. It has been grown widely and is considered one of the best the many deciduous holly in the nursery trade. The original plant is now gone from the park. If this had not been propagated, it would have been lost.

The latest introduction has been the Golden Rey Elm. It has a chartreuse gold cast all summer and even until the first freeze. This was discovered by a retired nurseryman Bruce Rey and patented and introduced by Warren and Son Nursery. It has received good responsse and is now grown by several nurseries all over the country.

We try to offer our customers the best of the new plant introductions plus the proven varieties that have stood the test of time. We offer over 50 varieties of trees, 300 varieities of shrubs, 300 varieities of roses, 500 varieities of hardy perennials, plus the widest selection of bedding plants for the yard of any nursery in Oklahoma City.

Our employess are experienced and ready to assist at any time with selection of plants or help with garden problems.
